Current Industry Challenges

A Note From GM Andrew Wilson.

I write today to highlight some of the challenges & difficulties we have faced in recent months, which may have impacted on you, our trusted & loyal customer.

When the COVID crisis began, we like many businesses anticipated some dire consequences for our industry. The government chose to support & protect the building industry predominantly through the housing stimulus. Short term this has proved a resounding success with the industry running hot. Whilst the extension should ease some pressure, it will not resolve everything.

But it has provided its own set of challenges, along with ongoing issues caused by COVID, some of which are as follows.

Supply chain is under huge pressure right across the industry.

The impacts of these shortages become more evident as each week unfolds. Price increases are coming thick & fast, often with little notice. Freight & shipping issues which affects imported product, steel increases that flows through to a wide range of product are just two of the major influences.

Manufacturer Lead Times

In addition to actual stock shortages, a wide range of manufacturers lead times are blowing out. This is typically no fault of their own, rather a combination of a sudden, rapid increase in demand, sometimes coupled with staff shortages. Recent examples without naming product or manufacturer are a historical 1 day turnaround, now being 4; or 3 days now being 2 weeks.

Staff recruitment remains a challenge

The end of Job Keeper has not immediately resulted in a spike in applications.

Johns Building Supplies remains resolute in its efforts to maintain our renowned customer service.

I ask that you assist us in this task by providing the following wherever possible.

          · Provide us as much advance notice of your building supply needs as possible.

          · Plan for delays across some product lines & factor in manufacturer price increases.

I thank the JBS staff who have already shown increased effort in these challenging times, and assure you we will do our best to convey advice of any delays & price increases.

“Our door is always open”…feel free to ask any questions in terms of the above communication.

Thank you for your continued support as we strive to provide you with the best service you can find in the industry.

Kind regards,

Andrew Wilson
